Carrier gas furnace code 15: Blower motor lockout

Gas furnace, Canada and United States

In two heating cycles in a row, the blower failed to reach 250 rpm or failed to communicate with the control within 30 seconds of being turned on. The control locks out and retries by itself after 3 hours. See code 41.

On the status light, this code is 1 short flash, then 5 long flashes.

This needs a licensed gas technician. There is nothing safe to check yourself. Leave the covers on and book a professional.

Only some models show this code. Check the list below.

What causes it

Standard amber-LED furnaces

  1. The blower wheel is loose or rubbing.

    Book a licensed gas technician

  2. A wiring fault between the furnace control and the blower motor.

  3. A failed blower control module or blower motor, or a failed furnace control.

Ultra-low NOx furnaces

  1. A fault in the blower motor or its wiring, or in the furnace control. The component test on the label points a technician at the blower, its wiring and the control.

How to read this code on your unit

The amber status light (red on some older boards) on the furnace control shows through a small window in the blower access door. A steady light means the control has power and no fault to show. A code is two digits. Count the short flashes for the first digit, then the long flashes for the second, so 3 short flashes followed by 3 long flashes is code 33, and 1 short then 1 long is code 11. Write the code down before you open the door or switch the furnace off.
