Weak flame signal
On GDH8, GDS8, GKS9, GMH8 / AMH8, GMH95 / GCH95 / AMH95, GMS8 / AMS8, GMSS92 / GCSS92 / AMSS92, GMSS96 / GCSS96 / AMSS96 / ACSS96, GMES80 / GCES80 / AMES80 / ACES80, GMES92, GMES96 / GCES96 / AMES96 / ACES96.
The furnace keeps running normally, but the flame sensor signal is low. If it drops too low the control will no longer sense the flame and the furnace will lock out.
This needs a licensed gas technician. There is nothing safe to check yourself. Leave the covers on and book a professional.
This involves the gas supply or burner. Only a licensed technician should open the unit or work on gas parts.
What causes it
-
The flame sensor is coated or oxidised. A qualified servicer cleans it; this is not an owner job.
-
The flame sensor is not positioned correctly in the burner flame.
-
Lazy burner flames from wrong gas pressure or poor combustion air.

Lockout, flame not proven during ignition
On GMEC96 / GCEC96 / AMEC96 / ACEC96.
The furnace used up its ignition retries without proving a flame and has locked out. The control shuts down for one hour before trying again.
This needs a licensed gas technician. There are a few safe checks you can do first, marked below. Anything inside the unit is a job for a professional.
This involves the gas supply or burner. Only a licensed technician should open the unit or work on gas parts.
What causes it
-
A gas supply or gas pressure problem, for example the manual gas valve outside the furnace is off.
Check the gas valve to the furnace and turn the gas back on safelyYou can do this
- Check whether the manual gas shut-off valve on the pipe outside the furnace is open. On most quarter-turn valves the handle sits in line with the pipe when open.
- If it was closed, do not just open it. Turn the gas back on using the start-up steps in your manual or on the label inside the furnace door: they set the thermostat low, turn off the power and the gas valve switch, then wait five minutes before checking for a gas smell. If you smell gas at any point, stop. Do not touch any electrical switch; leave and call your gas supplier from a neighbour's phone.
- If you are not comfortable doing the start-up steps, book a qualified servicer instead.
Reset a Goodman furnace lockout onceYou can do this
- Look through the sight glass on the blower compartment, note the colour of the status light and count the flashes. Write them down first, because cutting the power clears the code.
- Turn off the electrical power to the furnace, leave it off for more than 20 seconds, then turn it back on. Or turn the thermostat down until it stops calling for heat, wait a few seconds (no more than 20), then set it back.
- Left alone, the control also tries again by itself after one hour.
- Reset it once only. If the furnace locks out again, or locks out often, leave it off and book a qualified technician. A repeat lockout means the fault is still there. Do not keep resetting it.
-
A faulty gas valve.
-
A problem with the front cover pressure switch.
-
A dirty or faulty flame rod.
