Goodman gas furnace code EEE: Internal control board fault

Gas furnace, Canada and United States

The control board has detected an internal fault, and the furnace does not run.

This needs a licensed gas technician. There is nothing safe to check yourself. Leave the covers on and book a professional.

Only some models show this code. Check the list below.

What causes it

9 series three-character display (GM9S, GM9C, GR9S, GR9T)

  1. On GR9S80, GR9T80 and GR9T96 models, loose or damaged 120 V wiring, a poor ground wire, or damaged or miswired 120 V or 24 V wiring on the furnace.

  2. The control board has failed and is replaced.

ComfortBridge three-character display (GMVC96, GMVM97, GMVC8, GMVC80, GRVT, GRVM)

  1. The 120 V power wiring is loose or damaged, or the 120 V or 24 V wiring on the furnace is damaged or miswired.

  2. A poor ground wire.

  3. If the code does not clear after the power has been off for at least three minutes and the wiring is sound, the control board is replaced.

How to read this code on your unit

The code shows on the three-character display on the furnace control board, which you can see through the sight glass on the blower compartment. IdL means the furnace is idle and normal. A blank display means the board has no power or has failed.

  1. Turn the unit off and leave the covers on. Gas components must only be serviced by a licensed technician.
  2. Note the code, how often it appears, and the model and serial numbers from the rating label.
  3. Book a licensed gas technician and give them those details.
