Rinnai code 11: No ignition
Continuous flow hot water system (Australia), tankless water heater (United States)
The heater tried to light the burner but never detected a flame, so it stopped without heating.
This needs a licensed gas technician. There are a few safe checks you can do first, marked below. Anything inside the unit is a job for a professional.
This involves the gas supply or burner. Only a licensed technician should open the unit or work on gas parts.
What causes it
Australian models
-
The gas is turned off at the heater or the meter, or the LPG cylinder is empty.
Check the gas supply is onYou can do this
- Check whether your other gas appliances, such as the cooktop, are working.
- Check the gas isolation valve to the unit is open. On most quarter-turn valves the handle sits in line with the pipe when open.
- On bottled LPG, check the cylinder is not empty and the cylinder valve is open. If you smell gas, do not use switches or flames. Leave the area and call your gas emergency line.
Clear a Rinnai continuous flow error codeYou can do this
- Turn the hot water tap off, then on again.
- If the code is still showing, press the On/Off button on the water controller to turn it off, then on again.
- If it still shows, switch the heater off at the power point, wait 10 seconds, then switch it back on.
- If the code remains, contact Rinnai or a licensed technician with the code, model and serial numbers.
-
Air in the gas line, the wrong gas type, or inlet gas pressure too low.
-
A faulty igniter, a loose flame rod or earth wire, a gas valve fault, or a blocked or damaged burner.
US models
-
The gas is turned off at the heater or the meter, or the propane tank is empty.
Same check as above: Check the gas supply is on
Reset the unit by cycling the powerYou can do this
- Switch the unit off at its isolating switch or power point.
- Wait at least one minute, then switch it back on and let it try to restart.
- If the same code comes back, stop resetting it. Write down the code, model number and serial number before calling for service. Repeated resets can mask a fault that needs a technician.
-
Air left in the gas line after installation, the wrong gas type or gas-type setting, or inlet gas pressure too low.
-
The igniter is not sparking, the electrode or flame rod is loose or carboned up, or a gas valve is faulty.
-
Loose vent joints or vent terminal clearances that let exhaust be drawn back in.
