Goodman gas furnace light off: No power to the control board
Gas furnace, Canada and United States
The status light shows nothing because the control board has no 115 V or 24 V power, a fuse has blown or a breaker has tripped, or the board itself has failed. The furnace does not run.
This needs a licensed gas technician. There are a few safe checks you can do first, marked below. Anything inside the unit is a job for a professional.
This involves the gas supply or burner. Only a licensed technician should open the unit or work on gas parts.
What causes it
GMS8, GMH8, GMSS9, GMH95 and GKS9 boards
-
The power to the furnace is switched off, a circuit breaker has tripped or a house fuse has blown.
Check the thermostat and the power to the furnaceYou can do this
- Check the thermostat is working and set to HEAT above the room temperature, or to COOL below it if the problem is with cooling.
- If the blower runs all the time, look at the thermostat's fan switch. ON runs the blower constantly; AUTO runs it only while heating or cooling.
- Check that the power switch for the furnace, often a switch on or near it, is turned on.
- Check the electrical panel for a tripped circuit breaker or a failed fuse for the furnace. Reset the breaker or replace the fuse. If the breaker trips again, leave it off and call a qualified servicer.
- Make sure both furnace doors are in place. A switch stops the furnace from running while the blower door is off.
-
The blower door is off or not seated, so the door switch has cut the power.
Same check as above: Check the thermostat and the power to the furnace
-
The 24 V wires are loose or connected wrongly, or a short in the 115 V or 24 V wiring has blown a fuse. On GMSS9, GMH95 and GKS9 boards the technician also checks the 3 A fuse on the control board.
-
The integrated control board has an internal fault and needs replacing.
GMES80, GMES92 and GMES96 boards
-
The power to the furnace is switched off, a circuit breaker has tripped or a house fuse has blown.
Same check as above: Check the thermostat and the power to the furnace
-
The blower door is off or not seated, so the door switch has cut the power.
Same check as above: Check the thermostat and the power to the furnace
-
The control has locked out because the gas valve was powered when it should be off, or off when it should be powered.
Shut off the gas to the furnace, then the powerYou can do this
- Close the manual gas shut-off valve on the gas pipe outside the furnace first. If you smell gas, do not touch any electrical switch, do not use a phone in the building and do not try to light anything. Leave and call your gas supplier from a neighbour's phone.
- Only then turn off the electrical power to the furnace. Goodman says to shut the gas first whenever the furnace overheats or the gas does not shut off.
- Leave the furnace off and book a qualified servicer.
- Close the manual gas shut-off valve on the gas pipe outside the furnace first.
-
The 24 V wires are loose or connected wrongly, or a short in the 115 V or 24 V wiring has blown the 3 A fuse on the control board.
-
The integrated control board has an internal fault and needs replacing.
GMEC96 three-colour light
-
No 115 V power reaches the furnace, for example the power to it is switched off, a circuit breaker has tripped or a house fuse has blown.
Same check as above: Check the thermostat and the power to the furnace
-
The blower door is off or not seated, or the door switch is faulty.
Same check as above: Check the thermostat and the power to the furnace
-
A faulty disconnect switch.
-
No 24 V power to the control board.
