- Amber light flashing rapidly
Carrier gas furnace amber light flashing rapidly: Line voltage polarity reversed or the furnace is not grounded
Gas furnace, Canada and United States
Rapid flashing with no pause means the 115-volt supply polarity is reversed at the furnace, or on some boards that the furnace is not properly grounded. The control will not let the furnace heat until this is fixed.
This needs a licensed gas technician. There is nothing safe to check yourself. Leave the covers on and book a professional.
What causes it
-
The line and neutral wires of the 115-volt supply are reversed at the furnace.
-
The furnace ground is poor or missing. The control needs an earth ground to work and to sense the flame.
-
On two furnaces installed as a twinned pair, the 24-volt transformers are not phased correctly.
How to read this code on your unit
The amber status light (red on some older boards) on the furnace control shows through a small window in the blower access door. Look at it before you open any door or switch the furnace off.
Booking a licensed gas technician
Book a licensed gas technicianlicensed gas technician
- Turn the unit off and leave the covers on. Gas components must only be serviced by a licensed technician.
- Note the code, how often it appears, and the model and serial numbers from the rating label.
- Book a licensed gas technician and give them those details.
