Carrier gas furnace amber light off: No power to the furnace control
Gas furnace, Canada and United States
The status light is off, usually because the furnace control has no power. The control needs 115 volts at its supply terminals and 24 volts from its transformer.
You can often clear this yourself. Work through the causes below in order, most likely first.
What causes it
-
The circuit breaker or fuse for the furnace is off or blown, or the furnace's power supply switch is turned off.
Check the thermostat and the power to the furnaceYou can do this
- Check the thermostat is in HEAT mode and set above the room temperature.
- Check the fuses or circuit breaker for the furnace, and check the furnace's electrical power supply switch is on.
- If the furnace still does not run, note the status light code, without removing the blower door or turning the power off first, and call for service.
-
The blower door switch is open or faulty, which cuts power to the control, or the supply wiring to the furnace is broken.
-
The 24-volt transformer has failed, or the furnace control has failed even though it is getting power.
How to read this code on your unit
The amber status light (red on some older boards) on the furnace control shows through a small window in the blower access door. Look at it before you open any door or switch the furnace off.
Booking a licensed gas technician
Book a licensed gas technicianlicensed gas technician
- Turn the unit off and leave the covers on. Gas components must only be serviced by a licensed technician.
- Note the code, how often it appears, and the model and serial numbers from the rating label.
- Book a licensed gas technician and give them those details.
