Carrier gas furnace steady amber light: Normal, the control has power and no fault to show
Gas furnace, Canada and United States
A steady amber light means the furnace control has power and is not flashing a fault code. This is how the light looks in normal operation.
You can often clear this yourself. Work through the causes below in order, most likely first.
What causes it
-
This is normal. If the furnace still does not heat with a steady light, the troubleshooting guide moves on to the thermostat and its wiring.
Check the thermostat and the power to the furnaceYou can do this
- Check the thermostat is in HEAT mode and set above the room temperature.
- Check the fuses or circuit breaker for the furnace, and check the furnace's electrical power supply switch is on.
- If the furnace still does not run, note the status light code, without removing the blower door or turning the power off first, and call for service.
How to read this code on your unit
The amber status light (red on some older boards) on the furnace control shows through a small window in the blower access door. Look at it before you open any door or switch the furnace off.
Booking a licensed gas technician
Book a licensed gas technicianlicensed gas technician
- Turn the unit off and leave the covers on. Gas components must only be serviced by a licensed technician.
- Note the code, how often it appears, and the model and serial numbers from the rating label.
- Book a licensed gas technician and give them those details.
